Andrew Murray in his workshop

Hi, I'm Andrew.

Growing up, I was always fascinated by all of the tools in my Dad's workshop. From an early age, I was always helping him fix one thing or another around the house and (like my most kids) I hated it. But as I got older I began to understand the value of knowing how to fix something yourself, and to appreciate the satisfying feeling of doing something with your own hands instead of asking for help. As I continued to grow my knowledge past my college years, I started to demand more from the things I made. I didn't want to just make something that worked, I wanted to make something that was beautiful, that would last, and that I could be proud of.

Outside of woodworking, I'm a geographer and a data scientist. I have spent the last decade working in the field of environmental science and I have a lifelong passion for understanding the natural wood. When working with wood, I try to let the natural look and structure of the wood shine. I love trying to figure out what a piece of wood should become, rather than forcing it into a preconceived design. I also love the challenge of working with wood that has some kind of flaw or imperfection, and trying to figure out how to work with it rather than against it. I view woodworking as giving a second life to a piece of wood that might otherwise be discarded, and I try to make sure that I do that in a way that is functional and nice to look at!

I'm always interested in trying out something new or challenging, so if you have an idea for a custom piece, don't hesitate to reach out. I love working with customers to bring their ideas to life and to create something truly unique and special.

Wood that means something.

As a lifelong environmentalist, I feel a responsibility to ensure that I source nearly all of my hardwood from small local mills and individual craftspeople in the greater Cincinnati area — people who share a commitment to responsible land stewardship. While I will use the occasional exotic hardwood for a special piece, my preference is to source locally, and to work with wood that was sustainably harvested. Local varieties available include walnut, cherry, maple, oak, cedar and hickory, among others.
